So for Creative Writing Class we were assigned to observe a place then write a story about it. I chose my recent quiz bowl competition. This is what I came up with. I still have a lot of edits to make but I know there has been quite a bit of interest in my idea so I Figured I would put out this base as a bit of a teaser.
(I need to type up the first paragraph. I wrote it last night but was too tired to type it. Also its in my bedroom and I am too lazy to go get it.)
I suppose I should explain. You see, we were not the average quiz bowl team. Well, I was very average, but the rest of the team was extraordinary.
Mellie has telekenisis. This is a lot of fun when messing with normal competitors. Billy can shoot lasers out of his hands. You would be surprised how often this comes in handy in competitions. Xander and Topher have Photographic Memories. Xander also has a very interesting power. He can conjure up any elements of the periodic table to make whatever we need. This is great for instant popcorn on movie night! Topher is the ninja of the group. He can fly and turn invisible. He is always around when you need him though.
I was the alternate. I had no power. I didn’t mind. I loved being able to support the team. I had no clue what I was in for when I joined the team. I grew up reading comic books about superheroes and dreaming of what my life would be like if I had superpowers. So, imagine my delight when I walked into my first practice to find books floating around the room (controlled by Mellie, of course!), Xander making popcorn kernels and Billy cooking them with his lasers. Topher was the first to speak to me. He scared the heck out of me considering he was no where to be seen. They all welcomed me gladly onto the team.
It has only been two months since I joined the team but already I have become part of the “family.” I always helped them prepare for competitions. Not that they really needed me. Most of the time, they were the ones helping me. See, I had never really fit in before I met them. It wasn’t really that people weren’t friendly it was just I felt no connection to them. I had a few friends. They don’t talk to me anymore. I don’t mind.
Enough about me. We arrived to the competition on a seemingly normal sunny day. The workers were all preparing for us. We went into our assigned waiting area. I brought out UNO and we began to play. You would think a bunch of superheroes would have better things to do than play UNO but it is a lot of fun! We still play often.
Soon it was time for the alternates to be introduced. This is when I first met the other team’s alternates. The two girls were creepily identical twins who spoke and moved at the same time. They had fire powers. The boy was very large and had super strength. We were introduced to the host. She was a wicca who could read minds. Her name was Sally Simons.
After the alternates were introduced, we were taken to the audience. The guard was literally a giant. The competitors walked in. The other team consisted of another fire power, and ice power, and two others that I couldn’t tell at first.
The first round began. The other alternates began discussing my team’s weaknesses. Clearly, they forgot I was there. Or they didn’t care. I silently cheered my team on. All was peaceful until the third round. That’s when chaos broke out. The other team’s captain accused the host of favoritism and began shooting her with arrows. Where he got them I don’t know but after the things I had seen, I wasn’t surprised at all.
The rest of his team joined him in fighting her. She tried to fight back but they were stronger so my team joined in. Mellie began intercepting the arrows and shooting them back. Xander created water to put out the fire guy’s flames. Billy shot lazers are the other team. Their alternates rushed out to aide them. Topher flew Sally into the audience then took us both to safety. We ended up destroying the other team. Clearly, this made us the winners of this round. We had half an hour until the next team would arrive.
We went out to the hallway. We were goofing around and just relaxing. Then our next competitors arrived. They were a loud and aggressive bunch. The alternate’s were introduced. Sally had returned to host. I admired her bravery. The girl alternate was a little fairy. She could sneak around and spy on others easily. The boy was silent. I am pretty sure he was communicating with his team via his mind.
When the other team got situated I could tell something big was going to happen. I don’t think they had any major powers but they definitely were not human. The girl had glowing purple skin. One boy had flaming hair and was shooting mini fireworks to announce their arrival. Another boy wasn’t really a boy at all. He was more bear than human. Their captain was normal looking but he had super speed.
Things felt wrong during the first round. As the second round began, the fairy girl let out a blood curdling scream and the fast boy came and wooshed me away. Apperantly he could fly because seconds later I was on a balcony 5 stories up.
At this point I must point out their lack of originality. Ooh, big deal, they took the powerless girl hostage. Back to the story.
Several minutes later my team ran outside. They were still battleing with the enemy team. The fast boy left me to help his team. For some reason this balcony had no exit. Go figure…
As I tried to figure out how to get down, I watched the battle. As far as I could tell, no team was in the lead. I figured I had nothing better to do than watch them. Suddenly, everything froze. I had no clue what was going on. Somehow, I had frozen time. Luckily, I figured out how to unfreeze it.
I looked back down at the fight. We had defeated the fast boy, fairy, and flame boy. I called to Topher and he flew up to the balcony. I explained my new found power to him. We decided to see if I could freeze time without freezing him. I could. We made a plan. While the rest were frozen, he flew me down to the ground. I unfroze the fight and he flew off to distract the enemies while I explained our plan to the rest of our team. Topher appeared again. We knew it was only a matter of minutes before the other team would figure out what happened and return. We all got ready. When they other team returned we were prepared to destroy them.
I froze the other team. Mellie snatched their weapons and got them floating about their heads. I unfroze them. Billy began destroying their weapons with his laser beams. While they were distracted, Xander created an indestructible rope and Topher quickly flew around them to tie them up in it. Xander then created a large, indestructible jail cell around them. We had won!
So that's it so far! I am having a slight battle with format on here. Hopefully I fixed most of it. I still need to copy it onto a better word processor to fix spelling errors and such. Its odd to think that 11 years ago Word didn't have spell check. It is also quite sad that I am using software from when I was 6 on my laptops that I got when I was 15 and 17...
